Supporting Foster Carers at Work: Understanding the Role, Impact and How You Can Help


Overview:
 Fostering is a rewarding but demanding role that profoundly impacts both personal and professional life. In this session, Matt Taylor-Roberts, Founder and CEO of Proud 2 b Parents, will share his personal journey as a foster carer and provide insights into the everyday realities of fostering. Matt will highlight the significant impact foster carers have on vulnerable children and explore how workplaces can help support foster carers in balancing their responsibilities at home and at work.

In this session, Matt will:

  • Share his personal journey into fostering, discussing the emotional and practical challenges foster carers face.

  • Examine the profound impact fostering has on children, carers, and their families—both at home and in the workplace.

  • Explore the unique challenges foster carers face, from attachment issues and trauma to navigating professional meetings and balancing work commitments.

  • Offer practical advice on how colleagues can offer empathy, understanding, and support, both emotionally and practically.

  • Discuss strategies for creating a supportive workplace culture, including flexible HR policies and peer support networks for foster carers.

  • Touch on the diversity of foster carers, highlighting how carers from all backgrounds, including LGBT+ carers, bring unique strengths and perspectives to their role.

By the end of the session, participants will have a deeper understanding of what fostering entails and how they can play an active role in supporting foster carers at work. This session will focus on building a more inclusive and empathetic workplace environment where foster carers feel supported and valued, helping them succeed both at home and in their careers.
