Creating a future where our community is seen, heard, and fully acknowledged
Welcome to LGBT+ Parents & Carers Day, a day dedicated to developing awareness, representation, and acknowledgment of our vibrant community: LGBT+ parents/carers, and our children. Our mission is to ensure that the experiences, needs, and visibility of our community are recognised across all services.
Why LGBT+ Parents/Carers Day?
The LGBT+ parent/carer community remains highly underrepresented across all sectors, leading to a lack of visibility and understanding of our unique challenges and triumphs.
LGBT+ Parents & Carers Day aims to bridge this gap by shedding light on the narratives, struggles, joys, and achievements of our community. This day is more than a celebration; it's a call to action for increased awareness, representation, visibility, and acknowledgment.
Why 19th September?
On 19 September 1976, Spare Rib magazine exposed the injustices faced by lesbian parents in the UK, many of whom lost custody of their children due to discriminatory court rulings. This coverage not only challenged harmful stereotypes — like the idea that children need both a “mum” and “dad” — but also inspired pioneering research by Professor Susan Golombok.
Her work transformed understanding of LGBT+ parenting and laid the foundations for greater acceptance in the decades that followed.
This date remains a reminder of past struggles and a call to keep breaking down stereotypes while celebrating diverse families. Watch our interview with Professor Golombok to learn more.
The Theme of 2025: Visibility
This year’s theme, Visibility, focuses on bringing our community into the spotlight. We believe that visibility is key to breaking down the barriers that exist for LGBT+ parents and carers. By making our experiences known, we can inspire change and inclusivity.
Visibility isn’t just about being seen — it’s about being recognised, understood, and supported in all aspects of life.
