Adoption and Beyond: A Lived Experience of LGBT+ Parenting and Care



Overview:
 In this deeply personal and insightful session, Matt Taylor-Roberts, Founder and CEO of Proud 2 b Parents, will share his journey as an LGBT+ parent and long-term foster carer. Through a combination of storytelling, research, and practical takeaways, Matt will explore the complex and often challenging journey of adoption and fostering, the impact of trauma, and the joys and challenges of LGBT+ family life. Drawing on real-life experiences and authentic reflection, this session provides a powerful space for empathy, change, and actionable steps toward a more inclusive future.

In this session, Matt will:

  • Share his emotional journey to parenthood through adoption and fostering, including the challenges and rewards of raising children in a diverse family.

  • Discuss navigating microaggressions and systemic bias faced as an LGBT+ parent, and how these experiences shape parenting.

  • Examine trauma’s impact on parenting styles, exploring how past experiences influence care approaches and long-term outcomes for children.

  • Highlight the importance of building inclusive communities, especially in education and family services, to ensure every family is supported.

  • Celebrate LGBT+ resilience and identity pride, showing the strength that comes from embracing one’s true self while creating meaningful connections and support systems.

  • Provide practical allyship tips for creating inclusive workplaces, making sure LGBT+ parents and carers feel understood and supported.

  • Offer insights into LGBT+ adoption data and family diversity, illustrating the varied family structures within the LGBT+ community.

  • Share real strategies for supporting LGBT+ staff, clients, and customers, helping organizations foster a more inclusive and affirming environment.

By the end of the session, participants will gain a deeper understanding of the unique experiences of LGBT+ parents and carers, and learn practical steps they can take to support LGBT+ individuals in their personal and professional lives. This session is designed to empower participants to create meaningful, inclusive spaces that recognize and celebrate the diversity of family structures.
